If you’ve read Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kyosaki, you’re probably aware of The Cashflow Quadrant.
As freelancers, we fall smack dab in the middle of the ‘S’ — Self Employed — quadrant.
It’s a peeve of mine to hear people refer to freelancing as a “business.” As a freelancer, I know I can’t take weeks off at a time without my income going to almost zero. (Great) Business owners can do that.
Self-employment has some amazing benefits.
You get to do things your way and at your pace.
However, that could be a double-edged sword. The ability to do things your way means you can easily lack focus and not achieve the things you want to accomplish by going solo.
A significant factor self-employed persons forget is that they are still employed. Employees have requirements, rules, and objectives they need to hit that impact the company’s overall goals.
The only difference is that we now own the job.
